Is it possible to customize the layout itself?

Is it possible to customize the layout itself? By which, I mean which keys are where, what alternate characters go with which keys, etc...

There is no open way of doing that at the moment. The only way would be to unpack the apk and change manually some xml files inside (which is not straightforward and not-so-legal )

That's a real shame. Well, for what it's worth, I think that feature would absolutely rocket Smart Keyboard over the competition. The ability to customize a keyboard layout in detail, save, export and import them would be something very unique and would truly allow people to get exactly the layout they felt comfortable with and preferred.
