Problem with hardware keyboard after update ?

Post by enrico »

Hi.
I'm just a beginner, so maybe this is a not-issue ...

I installed the trial version of SmartK. last week, on my Sony Ericcson X10 Mini Pro (Android 2.1, with a hardware sliding QWERTY keyboard).

The idea is to use SmartKeyboard only in portrait mode (when the hw keyboard is closed), and viceversa NOT to use it in landscape mode, but to use the hw keyboard (and I don't want suggestion, dictionary, completion etc in this case: i want my hw keyboard).
Also, I'm using a modified layout of my hw keyboard (I added, ALT+several keys to obtain extra chars, like [] {} etc)

BEFORE your last update, everything worked ok
AFTER your update, I have a problem:

In landscape mode, when using the HW keyboard, NOW THERE IS A SMALL ICON at the top-right bar, showing "IT" (that is probably the ITALIAN layout, I use the T9 italian dictionary). This icon disappears in portrait mode.

The problem is that now your program seems to DISABLE my own hw kbd layout, and sets a very standard one (without all my parenteses!)

So the question is:
I DON'T WANT SMART-KEYBOARD TO INTERFERE WHEN IN LANDSCAPE MODE, I just want to use the hw keyboard with my own settings!
How can I do it ? I think that managing to disable that icon (the "italian layout set" feature) it should work again (?!)
I don't want any layout in landscape (but neither in portrait!) : I just want that, when in portrait mode and using the "T9 compact keyboard", the dictionary must be in Italian (like in my 1995 Nokia phone!)

So, maybe if I just set (where??) "use english/default layout"
or "never change keyboard layout"
or "just use italian dictionary in T9, do not set italian layout in hw keyboard"
it would work ...???

Thanks, regards
Enrico

Another test:
I was able to switch to "english" layout (I obtain "EN" in the top/right corner when hw keyboard is open) -- no surprise still I can't access to my own layout.

So, regardless SmartKeyboard uses the Italian layout or the English one, my own settings are lost when the layout icon appears on top/right corner.

Therefore my question should be: how to PREVENT Smartkeyboard to set any layout (italian, english.. ..) when in LANDSCAPE MODE, using hw keyboard ?

Thanks
Enrico

Indeed it's not a bug, it's a feature you activated yourself.
The only new thing is the icon showing the current language when you use the "physical keyboard" option (which means that SKP intercepts all hard keyboard events, which you don't want).
This option "physical keyboard" (in "general settings") is off by default, so you probably enabled it yourself.

Hi Cyril :-)

... If I enabled the "physical keyboard" by myself, it was not a bug of the software...! ;-) :-)

I do this, try if you can:
- Turn on mobile: no icon and keyboard works with my layout
- I write a new SMS, in standard portrait mode, using your T9 keyboard
- I rotate phone to Landscape mode, with keyboard closed: NOW there is the "layout" icon (THIS IS NOT GOOD)
- If I slide (= open) the keyboard, the icon doesn't disappear (THIS IS EVEN WORSE!), and my keyboard doesn't work as I expect.

So, conclusion is:
1. Probably you are right, you just added the icon in last version. So maybe I didn't notice the problem earlier (i didn't use it so much, now I bought the app so I always use it)
2. Apparently, since I'm NOT enabling the physical keyboard option, there is some problem -- unless there is another option that I don't know ("I wish a: never change layout in landscape mode and/or when using hw keyboard")

I have a question: why if I use your keyboard in portrait mode there is no layout icon and it only appears in landscape mode ?
Is it just a problem of screen size to display the icon in portrait, or you just enable the different layout (I don't want) in landscape mode ?

Thanks, regards

Hi again.

I run another test, and problem is even simpler to describe.

Earlier the smartkeyboard was not the default input: so I needed to start the SMS writer to pick it from the list of available inputs.
Now it's the default.

So:
- I turn the phone OFF then ON
- I rotate the phone in landscape: THERE is the layout icon (might be useful if user wants to use a "softkeyboard"), but not a problem.
- I open the hw keyboard: THERE is still the layout icon (and my own layout is disabled)
- I try to change your settings ("Disable on hardware keyboard", for example) ...
THE ICON IS ALWAYS THERE !

For my needs (I want a specific layout of hardware keyboard) not being able to turn off that function in landscape mode IS a bug !

The icon is supposed to be there ONLY when the hard keyboard is available AND the option "physical keyboard" is on. When I have time I will give you a version with additional logs to understand what is the problem with your phone.
