"Local" keyboard layout

Post by boky »

Hello,

how hard would it be to support different keyboard layouts? Specifically targeting the Balkans and ex-Yugoslav region (e.g. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia) where all accented characters are available on the "main" keyboard page without going through press-and-hold process to access them? So, the full layout would be:

Code: Select all

qwertzuiopšđ
asdfghjklčćž
yxcvbnm

There are keyboards for the Android that already support this (e.g. http://www.tipke.si/)

Technically it's very easy, but putting 12 keys on a single row is not very usable on most phones. But well, if there are requests for this layout, it could be added as an option

Nevertheless there are devices that can accommodate bigger-sized keyboard. And I am positive that even smaller devices could show it in the landscape mode.

Therefore I was thinking of the following possible solutions:
- implement the extended keyboard as a "language variant" (eg. SI and SI extended)
- add option to show extended keyboard in landscpae mode only

Heck, even combine the two: user selects the "extended SI" keyboard and based on the preference this keyboard appears always or in landscape only.

Hey! Just purchased Smart Keyboard Pro via PayPal, can't buy stuff from the Market yet...

I was wondering if you could include a QWERTY keyboard for the Hungarian language. All that would need changing is the Y and Z letters. This app makes writing in Hungarian a breeze, but having a QWERTY layout would make it even better.

Thanks,
Peter

Hello
That would be possible, but a simple workaround is to use the option "Force latin layout" and set it to "English (International)". Then you will have the same QWERTY for all languages.

Yes, but then I have all the accent characters in the alternatives, not just the hungarian ones. The english qwerty has all characters, hungarian layout has only the hungarian accents, which makes it easier.
Also, it's good to have different layouts (by that I mean the alternative characters) for each language, when browsing for instance, I switch to english, I don't need hungarian accents, neither predictions, so I use the english keyboard and predicitons, but one is qwerty the other, is qwertz, a bit confusing, and I'm getting used to the hungarian qwertz, but I don't want to... :))

So would it be possible to include a qwerty for Hungarian in the next update? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
