[REQUEST] E-mail Address Auto-Complete

Post by JFDroid »

Hi Cyril,

I'm using a Motorola Droid A855 on Verizon Wireless. I have Smart Keyboard Pro installed and I love the keyboard. I want you to know you're doing great work and I'm really thankful that you take so much time to continue development on this great application.

With that said, I am wondering if there is a way that you can incorporate a certain feature in a future update, or if you know if this is a bug or something left out intentionally.

On the stock keyboard, if I go into my Gmail app and in the "To:" line start typing a person's name, it will suggest e-mail addresses to auto-complete for me. For example, my dad's name is Terry, so if I start typing "te" for Terry, it will give me 3 suggestions (his 3 e-mail addresses that I have saved for him in my contacts list).

With Smart Keyboard Pro, this feature doesn't seem to work. If I start typing "te" I don't get any suggestions to auto-complete e-mail addresses, only words (as if I were entering text into any normal text field). I actually went back to using the stock Android keyboard for a while this weekend because I was doing a lot of e-mailing from my Droid and didn't remember e-mail addresses, just people's names, and so I reverted back to the stock keyboard so it would auto-complete people's e-mail addresses for me.

If you have any feedback on this, I would appreciate it. If somehow I am a complete moron and this feature is included, don't feel bad about pointing out the obvious to me! :P

Thank you,

Hi !
Well, I just tried this in gmail, and indeed the suggestion bar is not filled with the possible contact. However don't you have a drop-down list with suggestions, going down from the "To:" input box ? This drop-down list is handled by the gmail app itself, not the keyboard app, so it should not make any difference whether you are using smart keyboard or the stock keyboard.

I actually thought the same thing, but no, I don't get any drop-down box within the Gmail app itself. It looks like I'm supposed to... I wonder why I'm not getting that drop-down box. I checked on both Smart KB Pro and the stock keyboard, and regardless, whenever I click on the box I just get a blank text entry field, no drop-down boxes.

Do you get a drop down box? :( This is making me sad, lol.

Yes I have this drop-down, the same way there is a drop down when you enter an URL in the browser.
I'm sad for you ;) But I don't know why it would not work... Do you have Android 2.1 ? (though I don't know if that makes a difference...)

Cyril,

I am sooooo sorry for wasting your time.

It appears that the drop-down box only works in portrait mode, and since I do as much as I can in landscape mode (my phone is rooted, using a custom ROM so that I get landscape mode even on the home screen) I never thought to try portrait mode until now. That's why I wasn't seeing the drop-down box, because it doesn't work in landscape mode... because when you click on a box, it zooms in on the text entry box and pushes everything else off screen. Haha.

You are correct! In portrait mode, if I start typing, it comes up with a drop-down box of suggestions, which is all that I need. This work regardless of which keyboard I am using. Yay, I can go back to using smart keyboard pro and just use portrait mode to get the drop-down box. Woohoo.

While it is a pain to not be able to use the auto-complete in landscape mode (which the stock keyboard is able to do), I will settle for swapping into portrait mode to add my "To:" line when I do e-mailing.

Thanks for your help. You can probably close this thread before more people get confused. This feature isn't really necessary now that you pointed me in the right direction. Thanks :P

Ah ok I understand now... but there is supposed to be a feature in the keyboard, so that in landscape mode the suggestions of the input box (like emails in gmail) are given to the app keyboard to display suggestions. I will still have a look and check why it doesn't work (I think it should)
