Improvements and suggestion for italian typing.

Post by zauriel »

Hello, I am an italian user, I've been using SKP for a couple of months now and i came here to provide some feedback to improve SKP behaviour with the italian language.
Stated that i use 99% of times the T9 layout, here are my suggestions:

1- First of all, i totally agree with the necessity to fix the apostrophe issue. As stated before, the perfect behaviour of SKP should be, whenever a ' is typed, to consider the following typing as a separate word to be searched on the dict. In that way SK would not look in the dictionary for "l'word" wich 99% of the times is not there, but just for the "l'word" wich will hopefully be there! This would be a huge improvement as italian language makes a huge use of "elision" with many different words like articles, prepositions, etc.

2a- Single tapping behaviour: italian language makes a very large use of these single vowels: e, i, o. I believe that typing experience would be much more comfortable if tapping "6" would give me "o" as a first choice instead of "m" (wich is never used as a single letter in italian). Same exact thing for "4" giving me "i" instead of "g" and 3 giving me "e" instead of "d".
"E" is the italian conjunction (like english "and"); "i" is an article, (like english "the") and "o" stands for "or". This quick explanation just to let you imagine how many times italians use these single letters, and how much better it would be to have these vowels instead of the consonants when tapping the relative keys.

2b- Another thing I would like to suggest on the single tap of the numeric pad is to give a wider variety of predictions. I'll go straight to the point:
Tapping "2" should give me these predictions: a, b, c, à, 2
Tapping "3" should give me: e, d, f, è, é, 3
Tapping "4" should give me: i, g, h, ì, 4
Tapping "5" should give me: l, j, k, 5
Tapping "6" should give me: o, m, n, ò, 6
Tapping "7" should give me: p, q, r, s, 7
Tapping "8" should give me: t, u, v, ù, 8
Tapping "9" should give me: w, x, y, z, 9

That way it would be more comfortable to insert numbers and accented vowels, when needed.

I understand that this could be a lot of work to do, and I also understand that some of these features I've requested are useful/wanted only for italian language, so I don't know if you could just teach SK to behave differently when the italian dict is selected, or if it would be more convenient for you to add an "italian mode" check box to the settings in order to implement these features.

I also would like to know from others italian users what they think about the single tapping feature request.

Thank you for your attention, and thank you for the great work you are doing with SKP.

except the apostrophe problem (that got recently fixed in the latest beta) all the other problems can be fixed using autotext feature.

for example if pressig 3 (def) you would like to get the "e" first just to
d -> e

EDIT: the main problem is that SKP does NOT prioritize predictions based on frequence of use.
example:
if when pressing "3" I tap 10 times on "e" 9 times on "è" and 8 times on "d"
those prediction should get automagically prioritized (swiftkey does it)
e è d d f

THIS is what we need from SKP, those edits you propose will break other functions in my opinion.

I apologize I didn't notice the beta version with the fix before your replies: my bad.
I've installed it this morning, so far everything seems to be ok excepting for the fact that now "l'word" gives me "j'word" (and it seems also that this can't be solved with the autotext prediction without adding an extra tap to the workflow, please address me to the solution if I'm wrong.)

While I totally agree on the need to prioritize predictions based on the frequency of use (and that would finally solve the "2a" part of the problem both for italian and potentially any other language), I can't see which other features would the addition of accented letters and numbers to the prediction tab break.
One of the best T9 kb I've tried so far, the HTC Mod by xda, gives you the choice of both regular and accented letters, plus the corresponding number in the pred. tab, and I really loved it!
Maybe tastes can just vary.. :)

Btw, thanks for the autotext suggestion I'm trying to set it to gain the best from it!

adding the accented letters wouldn't break anything, I think it's a good idea. BTW when you'll understand completely how to use autotext you will find quicker to simply double tap on the e (ee > è in the autotext).

Hi
I've been trying this app for a while and I liked it so much.
I just have a problem. i want to have these letters as the first choice when i tap the letter:
3 -> e
4 -> i
5 -> l
9 -> x

so i put in my autotext
d -> e
g -> i
j -> l
y -> x
"
(only these entries). The first 3 of them work perfectly but when i press 9 the keyboard still suggests me "y". BTW it's not black but orange (i mean, when i press "2" the keyboard suggests me "a" and it's black, if i choose "3" it suggests me "e" and it colours it in orange). It seems like there's a hidden autotext entry that chooses "y".

That way it would be more comfortable to insert numbers and accented vowels, when needed..
I associate with this request (i also tried the "ee" entry for autotext but it doesn't work).

Another useful feature is the use of the central D-PAD key to "break" a word. In the HTC-IME when you are writing a word (with T9) and press the central key it stops considering that word and starts another word without inserting a space. This is useful when typing a composed word or conjugating a verb.

Thank you
