Keyboard freezes

My keyboard has frozen several times in the past few days. I notice when I try to search 'contacts'. Then I try to compose an e-mail and not only is the keyboard frozen, the area where the text appears is greyed out.

I suspect this is an issue with the phone as I tried the default keyboard and it was still frozen. But maybe someone on this forum has had experience with freezing keyboards in general and can give some insight.
