One variable that has not received enough attention in air polishing research protocols is the time of exposure. Since 1984, it has been established that a tooth surface receives a 0.5 second exposure to the dental handpiece ratio during a maintenance appointment.29 Some additional points to keep in mind when evaluating research outcomes include: visual changes in restorative materials detected with the eye do not necessarily equate to alteration in the integrity of the material, and statistical significance does not necessarily equate to clinical significance.
