smiley key??

Several people mentioned a smiley key in their comments but I can't find one. How do I display the smiley shortcut key? I tried all the skins (didn't really think it would make a difference) and disabled the language key (thought there might only be room for either). Neither worked. Help appreciated
Nexus One, android 2.1 not rooted (for now)

Hi
it appears automatically in place of the enter key when you are in a messaging app.
It doesn't appear when typing normal text for obvious reasons (you need the enter key to type multiline text)

i see it when using the nexus one messaging app, but not when using handcent

Hi
in Handcent you need to choose "smiley" in the "Action key type" option
