Rodriguez, 12, a 2011 recipient of an American Red Cross Hometown Hero Award for saving his mother's life with an EpiPen injection - recently found himself as the target of bullying, he and his mother said Thursday after she yanked him out of the school of 667 students.
On Wednesday, he and one of his alleged harassers got into a tussle in the hallway at school and Rodriguez suffered a face plant on one of the school's tile floors - going home with a swollen red cheek and prompting his mother to act.
"I had been calling and calling the school; calling teachers, calling administrators," prior to the physical clash," Barcome said. "I could never get a call back. I feel like it started with other students when I bought him those sneakers: 'Gimme those sneakers or I'll kick your ass. I want those sneakers.'"
Barcome said she called the school Wednesday afternoon and reached a vice principal, who informed her that her son would receive detention. This angered her, since she considered her son the victim. Barcome demanded a meeting.
On Thursday morning at the school, Barcome found her son alone in the "reflection room" while the boy he got in the confrontation with attended classes, along with the other boys. She said she was told that administrators were having trouble reaching the other boys' parents and Rodriguez would remain in the "reflection room" for his own safety until an investigation was concluded.
