Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Energy Secretary Steven Chu flipped a switch this Monday night in Washington, D.C., to turn on new LED Light China in streetlamps on the National Mall to make the popular tourist area brighter and less expensive on illumination. It was said that 173 LED lighting retrofit kits including LED spotlights had replaced the old illuminators and the new lighting should cut the utility bill for the mall by 60% to 65% while providing brighter lighting. LEDs provide brighter lighting and last longer, so the Park Service expects to not have to replace the bulbs for up to 25 years.
The energy-efficient lights were donated by a bulb-maker and installed for free by a local utility company from Third to 15th Streets, said by Associated Press.
