Sorry if this has been covered - I couldn't find anything in a search.
I use the abbreviations i.e. ("in other words") and e.g. ("for example") quite a bit. These can be a pain to enter because the auto capitalization wants to capitalize the letter i and the letter after the period. I made a custom auto text so that eg -> e.g. I did the same to make ie -> i.e.
The "eg" custom autotext works but the ie just gives me "ie" not "i.e." Any idea why this is happening? I'm using the standard English keyboard. For now I've solved it by defining "q" as "i.e." and it works. Just curious why "ie" doesn't.
I just did but can't get it to work. I also tried other combinations like "io" or "ii" but just won't take. Weird, since "eg" -> "e.g." works just fine as does "q" -> "i.e."
But if it's working for you, must be some weird setting somewhere that is not allowing this. Oh well, having "q" defined is an easy workaround.
Another option would be to replace one of the Smileys with i.e. I do this for several different shortcuts. I mean who seriously uses all 15 different Smileys? I've replaced them with common things I type that take a long time to type e.g. my email address which Comes in really handy on web sites where the suggestions and autocomplete are turned off.
i hadn't thought about doing auto-text's for a single letter... this may just change my world.
another fun thing to do with the auto texts is change them on somebody else's phone (assuming they have Smart Keyboard or a Blackberry). I once borrowed the phone if a friend of mine who curses a lot, and made auto texts to make all the dirty words less dirty (e.g. shoot, poop, fudge). it made her so angy when she couldn't express herself as colorfully. It was a great practical joke.
