"Show suggestions" available without "Quick Fixes"

Post by Mandark »

[Already reported as Issue #55 on the bugtracker]
...Having "Quick fixes" enabled often works out as having "Auto-complete" turned on, even if the user doesn't want/need it.
Especially for non-english speaking users, this proves to be a big deal in certain cases, as it automatically corrects words that might be common to that language, and ignores the user dictionary for the most part.

An option to simply show suggestions, without actually automatically correcting anything would be much appreciated..
Basically, what I really want from the the keyboard software is ONLY to show me the suggestions, and NOT to do any automatic correction by itself.
(I assume a lot of people have a similar setup, using English as a second language, and using the suggestion feature as sort of a spell-checker for foreign words)

Is there any chance of this beeing implemented in future builds?

Disabling "auto-complete" should be enough. Which problem do you have exactly?

As mentioned in the bug tracker, the biggest problem is the "Quick Fixes" algorithm automatically correcting what it assumes are typos, even though they are not.
It has some very unexpected interactions with the user dictionary (sometimes favouring it, and sometimes completly ignoring it), which is especially annoying on some of the shorter words, as mentioned in the issue on the tracker. These seem to come and go, I assume with the frequencey of use of the words in particular, but the problem is, I can't just relax and type, because form time to time, the keyboard will alter my text according to it's language-dependant algorhitm, which is something that I simply 1. do not need, and 2. do not want, as it's really more of a nuisance than a help (without a proper dictionary, the quick fixes are really completely uselles)

The most straight-forward example is the use of the letter "I".
I use "English" as my selected language, and what I want from my setup is just to show me the suggestions of the english words, and note get in the way of me typing the words in my language. But, in English, "I" is always capitalised, where as in my native tongue, "i" means "and". It, obviously, comes up very often, and every time I type it, I must remember to tap the lower-case "i" in the suggestion box, as the capitalised "I" is always (ALWAYS!) selected as the prime candidate (I tried selectind "i" manually numeruous times, I added it to the user dictionary manually, with no results whatsoever).

The thing is, I come across a few new words that behave in the same way every once in a while, a word in my language similar to an english word, which than automatically get changed. This is something I do not want, and one would assume that disabling "Auto-complete" would stop "automatically inserting the highlighted word" as it is described in the options entry. Sadly, it doesn't.

I think we can agree that, logically speaking, "Quick fixes" and "Show suggestions" are in no way related to one another.
I understand that the actual code implementation might have been done so that they are, but, surely, just because a user wants suggestions, doesn't mean they wants typing corrections. "Choice" is key here.
