enter key does not send message in stock app

Hi, I'm using the stock message app and I would like the enter button to send the message . I have chosen that option and disabled the smiley key, but when I hit enter it goes to the next line and when I hold enter, it shows the smiley popup. I am on a Thunderbolt with gingerbread. Thanks
