New update killed my phone..

Post by nick.koutrelakos »

The update with voice search and all did some damage to my phone. It wouldn't install, and it erased my stock keyboard as well as the universal voice search function on my Droid. Now I'm playing with Nandroid backups and restoring to stock to try to get it back..

Hi
bad luck... however I can't believe it's due to the app, especially if you tell me it erased your stock keyboard, it's just impossible for an app to do that - due to the Android security model - even if it wanted to (and of course it doesn't) unless the app requests root access (and it doesn't). It's even less possible if you say it didn't even install, so I have no explanation at all...
Good luck with the restore

i'm almost certain it was the app. i had just used the stock android voice to text before I went to the market and saw that there was an update for SK Pro. so I downloaded it, and it failed on the install, which happens every time. usually I have to uninstall it and then reinstall the newest version. but this time it wasn't showing up as being installed on my phone, and when i went into settings --> keyboard, all that was there was swype. No SK Pro, and no stock keyboard. the reason there was no stock keyboard is because somehow, the whole voice search function on my phone was deleted just by this failed install of SK Pro. so in the google search bad widget, for example, there wasn't even a mic button, just a magnifying glass to search. so i did a nandroid restore of a backup where i knew everything was working. i tried installing the update of SK Pro again, without uninstalling it first, and again, it failed, and took my voice search away. so i did the nandroid backup again and this time, i just uninstalled SK Pro and then reinstalled it and all was fine.

point is, my voice search and stock keyboard mysteriously vanished when the install of SK Pro failed..

I understand, but that's just impossible that installing/uninstalling SKP can cause this on a normal android system. So probably there is a bug in your custom ROM because that doesn't make sense (including the fact that you cannot install upgrades every time.. this is not normal either)

well I haven't been able to install updates for SK regardless of my ROM.. stock or custom. and other people have said they have this problem too. it says insufficient storage. i think ultimately, it's a problem with how the market packages your app.
