Long press on period to bring up symbols popup?

Sorry if this is already mentioned, I went back 3 months & couldn't find it.
Right now on Compact layout I have a comma (long press does nothing), and a period (long press is also a comma?!?).
I'd like to change it so that the long press on the period bring up a popup window (like the smilies window). Added bonus if which keys are in the window is editable in options.
Would also like to add something to the long press of the comma (maybe the apostrophe?)
