On-Demand Suggestions

Is it possible to have suggestions in XT9 pop up only when asked? Most of the time I never use the suggestions so I'd like to have the screen space back. If I turn off the suggestions and I type a word that has multiple possibilities there's no easy way to pick one. I have to delete the word, turn off XT9 and multi-tap it out. It would be nice if I could tap on the word and pick a different one.
