Swype has this feature. It works like so: The user swipes out their words, not worrying about if their words are being autocorrected to the right suggestions or not. After they're done typing a sentence or two they can place the cursor in or near a word, hit the special Swype button on the keyboard, and the word is highlighted and the suggestions/corrections window pops up again. They can choose one of the suggestions or reswipe the word they desired and the word is replaced.
Personally I try to stick with the "type fast and fix words in the end" method anyways. This would eliminate my trackball fumbling and make the whole process a breeze. Does it sound like a feature you could get behind? Correction could be triggered by a button like Swype, or a gesture. It seems like you would need to store the touch locations for each word so you'd know what to suggest. I think I read that Swype's memory is limited to the last 100 words. Would this add too much of a strain on speed/memory?

Re: Word Corrections AFTER multiple words typed
I'd say it's possible, but it's some work... Kept in the TODO list anyway
